Adrian Tomine a commenc crire des comics au lyce, parce qu'il se sentait "douloureusement conscient de son indiffrence toute forme d'interaction sociale". Ce sont les mini-comics (1 3 planches) de ce journal qui sont aujourd'hui runis dans ce recueil essentiellement autobiographique, o l'auteur s'incarne tour tour dans tous ses personnages, d'Adrian le misanthrope Amy la lectrice nocturne...En 32 rcits, Adrian Tomine dresse le portrait d'un amricain des annes 90 qui, malgr des erreurs de jeunesse, reste criant de vrit. Ses personnages dsagrables et faibles sont finalement trs humains. Mme si l'on est parfois excd par leur pessimisme, on se laisse porter par le talent de conteur de l'auteur. L'volution du graphisme est trs sensible dans ce recueil o petit petit le trait se simplifie et s'pure, gagnant en efficacit. Au fur et mesure que le trait se prcise, le scnario se renforce, devient plus crdible mais aussi moins maladroit.
Ces nouvelles, prvues pour une diffusion 25 exemplaires, ont travers la double barrire de l'ocan et de la langue pour rejoindre Blonde Platine dans les rayonnages des libraires, et ne sont certainement pas prendre comme un "goodie", mais bien comme un album part entire, qui plus est tout fait russi.

Consisting of three xeroxed sheets of paper, and with a print run of twenty-five, it was a less-than-auspicious, largely unnoticed debut. In the following three years, though, Optic Nerve developed at a startlingly rapid pace: the artwork and writing evolved with each story, production quality improved, page counts increased, and by issue seven, sales had reached 6,000. In 1994, Drawn & Quarterly took over the publishing duties of Optic Nerve, and the original seven issues sold out and were left out of print. 32 stories presents these rare, early editions, collected for the first time in a single volume.

By June 1943 the U.S. 8th Air Force daylight bombing offensive from Britain had passed through a full nine months of "experimentation". In its initial stages, targets had been limited mainly to targets in France and the Low Countries with occasional stabs at points close to or just inside the German borders. A prevailing lack of long-range escort fighters was a factor in restricting operations although the proponents of the "self-defending" bomber formation in which the heavy armament of the B-17 Fortresses and B-24 Liberators would suffice to see them to and from targets with acceptable loss ratios, were still confident of success. Their enthusiasm must have been tempered by the 17 April mission when 16 out of 115 B-17s were Missing in Action (MIA), but only a sustained period of operations under non-escort conditions would settle the issue for better or worse.
