Encyclopedia of American Law (Facts on File Library of American History)
Facts on File | 2002 | ISBN: 0816043299 | Pages: 542 | PDF | 2.65 MB
Encyclopedia of American Law "is written in a style that demonstrates that the law need not be mysterious and confusing, but that instead it should be open to all of us." Often books concerning legal information are difficult to follow, but the person who reads this volume will not find it necessary to have a legal background or a legal vocabulary. Definitions for terms such as Assault and battery are stated clearly. Landmark cases such as Brown v. Board of Education are summarized with only the most important facts.
Noted scholars in the field of law have written more than 400 alphabetically arranged entries, each of which includes a brief list of further readings for those who wish to do more research. From half of a page to three pages in length, entries address terms, issues, concepts, institutions, and court cases. Individuals who are covered include a selection of Supreme Court justices, presidents, and others (Martin Luther King Jr., Rodney King).
The appendixes at the end of the book contain the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, the Constitution of the United States, the Bill of Rights, other amendments to the Constitution, and the Emancipation Proclamation. It is useful to find all of these documents in one volume. A list of U.S. Supreme Court justices from John Jay through Stephen Breyer is also included. Other helpful appendixes are "Locating Court Cases and Laws," "How Cases Reach the United States Supreme Court," and "The Stages of a Criminal Case."
