The book is organised into three main sections. The first deals with ferrous metals, covering carbon and alloy steels, cast irons and stainless steels. The more highly alloyed stainless steels, which are often classified as super stainless steels or as part of the body of corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs), are included as proprietary or non-standard stainless steels. This conforms to the approach used in the earlier volume but perhaps their importance could have warranted a separate section in this update.

The next section addresses non-ferrous metals and specialty products, giving an update on common and not-so-common metals and alloys. Many of the entries under specialty products were not in the original handbook, such as brazed and soldered joints, metallic coatings, clad and amorphous metals, and metal-matrix composites.

The third part on environmental performance of non-metallic materials is new. This could have been expanded further given the use of plastics, ceramics, refractories and concrete in aggressive applications. There is, for example, no chapter on thermoplastic materials. There is coverage of protective coatings and more information on organic coatings can be found in the ferrous metals section
