The Unwritten #1-5 (Ongoing)
Eng | RS & Hotfile | 3 CBR 2 CBZ | Vertigo (DC Comics) | May 13 - Sep 10, 2009 | 115.9 MB Total

The Unwritten is the new comic book series about Tom Taylor, who serves as the basis for a very popular series of novels written by his father about the adventures of a boy wizard named Tommy Taylor, but whose life suddenly becomes intertwined with that of his fictional namesake. It is being published by the the Vertigo imprint of DC Comics. After four dazzlingly baffling glimpses into the newly complicated life of Tom Taylor, The Unwritten switches gears for issue #5, providing a spectacular standalone issue that suggests that perhaps Tom's father isn't the only writer in history who's life has been full of mystery and secrets. An imaginative tour de force and as it says on the cover of Issue #5, one of the most interesting comics of the year.

In the India of the British Raj, young journalist and would-be novelist Rudyard Kipling gets an offer he can't refuse. It's an offer that will catapult him to fame, fortune and inexorable destruction. The secret history of the Unwritten begins in this stand-alone story... Written by Mike Carey; Art by Peter Gross; Cover by Yuko Shimizu -- issue #5 solicitation, dccomics.com

"Carey and Gross perfectly capture the zeitgeist of our Harry Potter-obsessed-chaotic-apocalyptic-times with a depth and whimsy that makes me jealous, and I can't wait to read more of THE UNWRITTEN." — Ed Brubaker

Gone are all (well… most) of the cast we're come to know so far, in favor of a flashback story featuring Jungle Book author Rudyard Kipling. What Mike Carey details this issue is Kipling's dealings with a shadowy organization that promises to trade renown and fame for a little literary compliance. Essentially, Carey "retcons" history in an intelligent, chilling way, one that eventually circles around to connect with the book's main storyline. -- IGN Review of Issue #5, September 11, 2009
