This book is different from most others written about ancient Rome. Many of the others focus on the glories of the empire, its impact on early Christianity, or its decline and fall. Still others concentrate on the Roman emperors, their wars and conquests, or their debauchery. These are popular topics. This book, however, presents a somewhat different picture of ancient Rome. To do so, it first gives us a brief overview of the Roman Republic and the resulting Roman Empire with emphasis on its social classes, its evolution, and how the nation was governed. With that as a background, the author then delves into the various economic and social problems which the Republic and the later Empire encountered during their history. He discusses how and why those problems arose, what the government did about it, what the results were, and finally what the ultimate consequences of their actions were.
