Sara Oldfield, "The Trade in Wildlife: Regulation for Conservation"
Earthscan Publications | 2003 | ISBN: 1853839590 | 232 pages | PDF | 1,9 MB
"This book should stimulate change in how the trade in wildlife is controlled and how it will be supported in the interests of both the resources and resource users. Contributors focus primarily on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). There seems to be a developing realization that enforcement alone is inadequate to protect renewable resources, and that sustainable use, because it provides for human needs, can gain grassroots support for reasonable regulations that ensure peoples' livelihoods. Some contend that legal trade in renewable resources should not be allowed because it promotes illegal trade, while others contend the opposite. Several examples reported here show that legal trade can actually decrease or almost eliminate illegal trade, e.g., trade in crocodilians. Anyone interested in the complex interplay of wildlife-related science and society should read this book. Some of the pertinent political agendas are revealed here. The concluding chapter includes only some of the conclusions this reviewer reached. For a more local view, see Graham Child's Wildlife and People: the Zimbabwean Success (1995). Summing Up: Recommended. All levels." -- A. S. Mossman, emeritus, Humboldt State University in CHOICE
This volume provides a critical assessment of how the trade in wildlife is regulated and how those regulations are enforced. Through analysis of case studies and comparisons with the trade in other illegal goods, the book shows what must be done if conservation efforts are to be supported by trade regulations, and not undermined.
