The extraordinary Junkers J.I was one of the most significant warplanes of the First World War precisely fulfilling the roles for which it was designed: low-level contour combat, tactical reconnaissance and contact patrol duties. Extensive use of armour plate made the J.I generally popular with its crews who appreciated the protection afforded by the aeroplane's tough construction while they performed their various, and highly dangerous, duties over the battlefield. Lightly armed the J.I nevertheless proved invulnerable to enemy fire and as author P M Grosz relates, not one was ever recorded shot down in action. Our 38th DATAFILE represents the first monograph exclusively devoted to this heavyweight armoured biplane.
