It was klsmetlc that the USAF's first supersonic fighter would be the first of the "century series" to be blooded in combat. The Super Sabre was approaching what many thought to be the limits of it's operational life when the war in Southeast Asia tlared anew in 1964. The F-100 was on the threshold of the most illustrious chapter of It's history.
Ten years had passed since the French evacuation of Indo-China, the subsequent Geneva Conference, and the part tioning of Vietnam. Eight years-had passed since the deadline for nationwide Vietnamese elections, and Ho Chi Min's communists were about to abandon their coven war against their neighbors in South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, in favor of all-out general warfare. Confident that ten years of guerilla war had so weakened the governments of these countries that they were on the brink of collapse. Ho ordered his armies to attack on all fronts. He envisioned the reunification of all of Indochina under the red banner of Hanoi.
